Rakhine IDPs Face Outbreak of Diarrhea and Skin Diseases

Internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Ponnakyun Township, Rakhine State, are experiencing an outbreak of diarrhea and skin diseases. The outbreak is attributed to inadequate access to clean drinking water, poor sanitation, and unsanitary living conditions in the IDP camps. A similar outbreak affected over 200 IDPs in July and August of this year.
There are five IDP camps in Ponnakyun Township, and all of them are reporting cases of diarrhea and skin diseases. A representative from the Ponnakyun Youth Association mentioned that while some humanitarian organizations and other groups have opened medical clinics, there are still areas that remain inaccessible and underserved.
A representative from the Ponnakyun Youth Association explained, “ The lack of clean water and unsanitary conditions are contributing to the outbreak. People are using nearby ponds as a water source, which has led to an increase in skin diseases, especially among the large population in the camps. We saw a similar outbreak earlier this year, and now it’s happening again. Many IDPs are suffering from these diseases and cannot afford medical treatment.”
In Ponnakyun Township, there are over 60,000 displaced people from Sittwe, Rathedaung, Pauktaw, and Ponnakyun, and it is reported that more than 100 people, including both adults and young people, are suffering from diarrhea.
The displaced people in Ponnakyun have been in displacement for over eight months. They are still in need of proper shelter, toilets, and essential medicines, according to those assisting the IDPs.
“ With winter approaching, warm clothing and blankets have become critical needs,” said a representative from the Ponnakyun Youth Organization.
“ Our side has opened clinics, and other organizations have also set up clinics. However, there are still areas that remain out of reach. The displaced people are struggling with necessities like food and shelter, and they also lack access to medicines. With winter approaching, warm clothing and blankets are among the most urgent needs,” the representative said.
“ Currently, in addition to pregnant women, children, and the elderly, there is a need for vaccines, supplements, and medical supplies. Locally, humanitarian organizations and those assisting displaced persons are taking the lead in providing aid, such as accepting donations for IDPs. However, there are no organizations dedicated specifically to supporting the displaced, so there is a significant need for more assistance,” it was reported.
