Fuel Prices Skyrocket to 40,000 Kyats per Liter in Sittwe

Arakha Times (21-November-2024)

The price of 92 octane fuel in Sittwe, Rakhine State, has surged to around 40,000 kyats per liter, according to local sources. Previously, the price hovered between 20,000 and 30,000 kyats, but in recent days it has sharply risen to its current level.

A local resident told Arakha Times, “Right now, 92 octane fuel prices are at 40,000 kyats per liter, and even at that price, it’s hard to find a shop to buy from. Transport is becoming increasingly difficult. The prices fluctuate—if no fuel shipments arrive, the prices spike; if shipments come in, they drop. A few days ago, prices ranged from 26,000, 27,000, to 28,000 kyats, then suddenly rose to 30,000, and yesterday morning, it shot up to 40,000 kyats.”

Major fuel stations in Sittwe have been closed for some time, forcing locals to buy fuel from small roadside shops. This sharp price increase has led to locals conserving fuel, with some opting to walk instead of using vehicles for travel.

Despite the rising fuel costs, basic food prices have also increased compared to earlier periods, although cooking oil prices have remained stable, a local resident shared.

“A tin of condensed milk now costs 6,800 to 7,000 kyats. Eggs are priced at 1,200 to 1,300 kyats per egg, with smaller ones at 1,000 kyats. Drinking water in large bottles costs 1,500 kyats. Charcoal, sold in sacks of 10 viss (about 16 kg), is priced at 30,000 to 40,000 kyats. Shwe Bo rice is selling for 107,000 kyats per sack,” the resident explained.

The prolonged conflict between the military and the Arakan Army (AA) has significantly impacted trade routes. November 13 marked one year since road transport routes were closed due to ongoing fighting.

Currently, 11 townships are under AA control, while the remaining seven, including Sittwe, remain under military administration.
