Mothers in Rakhine Resort to Diluted Milk Powder as Malnutrition Halts Breastfeeding

Arakha Times | November 29, 2024

Mothers in Rakhine State who recently gave birth are unable to breastfeed due to malnutrition and are left with no choice but to feed their newborns diluted milk powder, sources told Arakha Times.

A volunteer involved in relief efforts stated that insufficient consumption of nutritious food and medicines has led to an inability to produce breast milk. Consequently, mothers are using packets of powdered milk to prepare formula for their infants.

“These mothers can’t eat properly to maintain their health, and their milk doesn’t come in. Without breast milk, both the mothers and the babies suffer from malnutrition. They can’t afford supplements or proper nutrition. Now they’re forced to use small packets of milk powder to feed their babies. You know, those little sachets,” the volunteer explained.

Currently, both postpartum and pregnant women are facing significant challenges, sources confirmed.

Although medications are available for purchase, many cannot afford them, limiting access to proper medical care, a local from Sittwe revealed.

“For pregnant women, there aren’t enough clinics or adequate nutrition. It’s very tough for them. After giving birth, mothers face financial constraints that make proper care impossible. There are free clinics run by NGOs, like the one in the Impala neighborhood. If they visit these clinics, hospitals provide free care. But without attending these clinics, it costs a lot,” the local added.

The ongoing conflict between the Arakan Army and the military council marked its first anniversary on November 13, 2024.

Since the fighting began, the military council has imposed a blockade on all land, sea, and air routes in Rakhine State, severely affecting the lives of the local population.
