Arakan Army Cracks Down on Theft in Buthidaung

Buthidaung, Rakhine State The Arakan Army (AA) announced on December 3 that its security forces have arrested and punished hundreds of individuals accused of theft and receiving stolen goods in Buthidaung. The arrests were made after investigations conducted in accordance with legal procedures, the group stated.
In its announcement, the AA alleged that many of those apprehended are Muslims from Buthidaung who were trained by the military council, involved in violent arson attacks, and linked to groups such as ARSA, RSO, and ARA.
The AA noted that the ongoing conflict and transitional administration under the Arakan People’s Revolutionary Government created gaps in law enforcement that were exploited by thieves from various towns. These individuals reportedly looted and destroyed property belonging to residents of all ethnic groups, taking advantage of the instability.
Since assuming control of Buthidaung on May 18, 2024, the AA’s law enforcement forces have been working to identify and arrest those responsible for arson and looting. The group stated that all actions are based on evidence and witness statements and are conducted within the framework of due process.
On November 30, 2024, the AA’s security forces formally returned 31 recovered stolen properties to their rightful owners during a ceremony in Buthidaung Township. According to the AA, this marks the first large-scale restitution of stolen goods in a single day.
The AA added that additional recovered items remain in their custody and will be returned to rightful owners in future handovers under conditions that ensure security and stability.
