Residents of Rakhine State have reported challenges during the administrative transition in some areas of the region.
Some administrators appointed by the Rakhine State authorities are allegedly abusing their power and exploiting local farms and lands.
One Rakhine resident shared that some administrators are using their authority to grant permission for their relatives to live and work on land that has been cultivated by their ancestors.
“No matter which government comes, some power-hungry individuals abuse their authority over the villages in Rakhine State. What kind of situation is this? The situation is that our ancestors, our parents, and our people have no rights to the land. In the villages, land is often claimed by someone because they work and live there. But when someone becomes an elder, they no longer need the original occupants and give the land to their relatives. I was evicted this way. We hear statements like ‘I’m the leader, so I can do whatever I want because I’m the leader,’ and ‘I’m a woman,’” she explained to the Arakha Times.
Locals also pointed out that some people in the judiciary and administration are not properly trained, leading to further abuses of power.
It is necessary to identify those responsible for these abuses and impose appropriate punishments, the residents stated. They also emphasised the importance of informing the public about such actions.
A local from Ann suggested that it would be better if the Arakan Army enforced strict laws related to farmland and environmental conservation and established a proper administrative unit.
“Until now, some have stubbornly occupied and rebuilt land in Rakhine State. When an administrator is unable to properly manage the situation, mistakes can occur. However, if the Arakan Army strictly enforces land and environmental conservation laws, mistakes can be prevented. Without specific policies or clear regulations, such issues can arise. It would be better if people who genuinely stand up for the community take leadership in the administrative sector,” he told the Arakha Times.
The Arakan Army has also encouraged educated young people from Rakhine to engage in all sectors where they can contribute.
