Some MOD-Aligned Battalions Collaborate with AA

Arakha Times | November 28, 2024

Several battalions under the Ministry of Defense (MOD) of the National Unity Government (NUG) have reportedly collaborated with the Arakan Army (AA), citing a lack of arms support from the MOD.

The defecting battalions, originally from central Myanmar, joined the AA after facing difficulties in receiving weapon supplies from the MOD.

“Two battalions from our side have already switched to the AA. What we hear from the MOD ranks is that the lack of arms support pushed them to make this move,” a representative from a non-MOD-aligned organization in central Myanmar told Arakan Times.

The battalions that joined the AA are now actively participating in joint military operations with the group.

“When the supply of weapons and ammunition became unreliable, some MOD battalions left and joined the AA. They even moved to Rakhine State. If they return, it will not be as MOD-aligned units but as part of a different military entity,” the source added.

The collaborating battalions are expected to serve under the AA in Rakhine State for nine months. Following that period, they plan to return to central Myanmar with military equipment captured from the junta during battles.

Currently, PDF units from Magway Region, Sagaing Region, and Chin State are also collaborating with the Arakan Army in operations against the junta, according to reports.
